The lasting impact of emotional abuse.

Emotional abuse can be difficult to recognise, particularly when it develops gradually over time. Unlike physical abuse, emotional abuse often leaves invisible wounds that can deeply affect confidence, self-worth, and mental wellbeing.
Controlling behaviour, manipulation, constant criticism, isolation, gaslighting, and intimidation are all forms of emotional abuse. Many people begin to question themselves, lose confidence in their judgement, or feel trapped in unhealthy relationships.
The effects of emotional abuse can continue long after a relationship has ended. Survivors may experience anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, trust difficulties, or emotional overwhelm.
At Helia, we provide a safe and supportive space for individuals recovering from abusive experiences. Therapy can help clients process trauma, rebuild confidence, and regain a sense of identity and emotional safety.
Recovery takes time, and every person’s experience is different. There is no “right way” to heal. The most important thing is having support that feels safe, compassionate, and non-judgemental.
No one deserves to feel controlled, frightened, or emotionally diminished in a relationship. Support is available, and healing is possible.
